Skin is the largest organ in the human body, it has a waterproof barrier to protect from bacteria and viruses, and its cells are replaced every 27 days.
Skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.
The epidermis is the top layer of skin, it’s primarily composed of dead cells called keratinocytes which protect against bacteria and other foreign substances. It also contains melanin that gives our skin its coloration. The middle layer is known as the dermis, this layer contains collagen and elastin fibers that provide structure to our skin, allowing it to stretch without tearing or breaking down. Hair follicles are embedded in this layer too, providing insulation from extreme temperatures along with sweat glands that regulate body temperature by releasing sweat into the environment when we overheat. Finally, the innermost layer is called the hypodermis or subcutaneous tissue; this provides cushioning for soft tissues like muscles and fat to help absorb shock and keep us insulated from cold temperatures.
Our skin plays an important role in keeping us healthy by shielding us from harmful things like viruses and bacteria as well as providing immunity so pathogens cannot enter our bodies through cuts or abrasions on our skin surface. Additionally, it helps facilitate vitamin D production by absorbing sunlight which converts cholesterol into a form of vitamin D known as cholecalciferol vital for maintaining calcium levels within your bones thus preventing osteoporosis later in life! Skin can also repair itself when necessary due to its renewability; stem cells located inside hair follicles are triggered whenever damage occurs causing them to migrate towards damaged areas where they differentiate into new healthy cells repairing any broken structures quickly without scarring (unless deep lacerations occur). Lastly but not least, our sense organs such as eyes ears nostrils etc all contain receptors sensitive enough detect physical sensations like heat pressure touch vibrations sound light etc giving us information about whats happening around us at all times!
