How to Apply Night Time Makeup

When it comes to makeup after dark, the times call for a bit of drama: shimmer, glam, and sexiness. Unlike the daytime, where people usually go for the more natural look, nights are the perfect occasions to step out of your comfort zone and go for a bold look.

To help guide you through the best approaches to applying night time makeup, we’ve compiled 10 steps you can follow. If you’re ready to go fearlessly into glam that’ll turn heads, hop in and read on!

  1. Prepare Your Skin

The first part of any makeup routine is cleaning the skin, as this will give you the most optimal base to work with. Using a cleanser or face wash, remove dirt, oil, dead skin cells and bacteria.

After this, you’ll want to use a mild sugar scrub on your lips to remove any peeling or texture, which will help lip products glide right on. Lastly, you’ll want to use a moisturizer to hydrate your face and lock in the goodness before getting to your evening makeup application.

  1. Prime Appropriately

The kind of primer that will best prepare your face for makeup depends on the type of skin you have. If your skin is generally on the dry side, it’s best to look for words like “hydrating,” “glowing,” and “dewy” when searching for a primer.

On the other hand, hunt for words like “silicone-free” and “magnifying” if your skin is on the oily side, as these will support you in reducing the shine on your face.

  1. Pick Your Foundation

If the occasion you’re getting ready for is going to be a lengthy one, you’ll need to make sure your foundation is able to support you through the night. When you’re looking for a foundation, search for one that has a staying power of 12 to 16 hours without creasing as well as one that can create that airbrushed look.

  1. Pull out the Concealer

It’s likely that you’ve probably heard the phrase “nothing a little concealer can’t fix!” The reason it’s a common phrase is because it’s often true.

Concealer is one of the magics of makeup. If you have any acne or under eye circles, as these are frequently the most problematic areas, apply some concealer to help your look. Be careful not to apply too much, especially under the eyes.

Start by applying on the inner and outer eye areas and continue adding only as necessary.

  1. Apply Powder

Although applying powder is satisfying and you may feel inclined to put it on all over your face, try to focus on areas that will show up shiny in pictures. Areas like the chin, sides of the nose, and middle of the forehead are good to concentrate your powder. To apply this makeup, it’s best to use a small, fluffy brush and go forth with a gentle tapping motion in the areas that need it.

  1. Contour

Alas, we’ve come to arguably the most integral step – contouring. This part of your makeup routine has the power to make or break your look. If you apply too much, it can look overdone.

However, just the right amount of contour will ensure your face looks beautifully defined. When you’re choosing a contour color, it’s best to go with a subtle one. When applying it to your face, concentrate on areas like near your hairline, along your jawline, under the cheeks, and along the sides of your nose.

  1. Add the Blush

At this point in your routine, it’s time to add some life to your face with the perfect blush. Due to how easily blush can fade, I recommend opting for a cream formula for the perfect amount of color that will last through the night.

  1. Choose a Look for the Eyes

For classic makeup evening looks, smokey eyes hardly let us down. Apply your eye shadows with a brush, blend to soften the edges and top off the look with some liquid eyeliner and you’re ready for the next step – lashes!

  1. Volumize the Lashes

Smokey eyes are a common night time eye makeup. If you went for the smokey eye, you’ll want to make sure your lashes can match the drama. Definitely be sure to go for volumizing mascara that’ll put the perfect accent on your beautiful lashes.

To help lengthen your lashes to prepare for nights like these, consider using a lash serum during daytimes. We’ve written about the 3 Best Eyelash Serums for 2021, so check it out if you’re interested in learning more!

  1. Finally, Paint the Lips!

Lastly, it’s time for the icing on the cake – the lips. Slap some bold, beautiful color on your lips and be sure to go for a formula that will last you through photos, drinking, eating, and so on.

Don’t forget to have fun!
